Stainless steel precision casting, also known as investment casting, is a casting process that minimizes or eliminates cutting as much as possible during the casting process. It is a casting method with a wide range of applications, high dimensional accuracy, and excellent surface quality. At the same time, the casting process is not under ultra-high temperature conditions, making it more suitable for casting components in high-precision industries such as aerospace and national defense.
The earliest stainless steel precision casting can be traced back to the 1930s and 1940s. The United States was the first to use stainless steel precision casting method to cast turbine blades in its cutting-edge aviation engines at that time. The finished products received praise from all aspects, which further promoted this method widely.
The research and use of stainless steel precision casting in China began after the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Subsequently, with the development of China's defense industry, research institutes or foundries for stainless steel precision casting have been established in Shenyang, Guizhou, Beijing, Xi'an, Hunan and other places. However, objectively speaking, China's stainless steel precision casting industry is still in the development stage and cannot yet meet the development requirements of industries such as aerospace and defense.
